Roaming refers to the ability for a mobile phone customer to automatically make and receive voice calls and SMS, send and receive data, or access other services, including home data services, when travelling outside the geographical coverage area of their home network, by means of using a visited network. For example: should a subscriber travel beyond their mobile network operator’s transmitter range, their mobile phone would automatically hop onto another phone company’s service, if available. The process is supported by the Telecommunication processes of mobility management, authentication, authorisation and accounting billing procedures (known as AAA or ‘triple A’).
